SPOOM-MA SPRING MEETING
April  16 - 18, 2026
Lewisburg and Union County Pennsylvania

 

CONFERENCE HOTEL: The Inn at Lewisburg Best Western 7701 West Branch Highway, Lewisburg, PA 17837 A block of 10 rooms (1 King or 2 full/ queen beds) has been reserved for check-in on Thursday, April 16 or Friday, April 17. Check-in after 2 pm and checkout by 11 am.

Call 570-524-5500 and mention SPOOM Mid-Atlantic Block for a group rate of $132 including 11% tax and fees. Rooms must be reserved by April 8. The price includes a complimentary hot breakfast from 6:30 to 9:30 am.

Thursday, April 16: RAILROAD MUSEUM TOUR AND DINNER

4:00 to 5:30pm           Tour of Railroad Museum, Depot Road, White Deer, PA

The White Deer station, built in 1872, houses the museum that preserves Central PA NRHS history. On display are two passenger cars, three cabooses and the restored station rooms. 

6:00 to 7:00pm           Dinner at Ciro's Ristorante Italiano,  22 Main Street, Watsontown

Diners will order ala carte from a condensed menu and pay individually.

Friday, April 17:       MILL TOURS AND MORE

8:30am                        Bus Pick-Up at Conference Hotel, 7701 West Branch Highway, Lewisburg

9:00-9:45am               Tour of Penns Creek Pottery, 30 Pottery Ln, Mifflinburg

Sampsel’s Mill serves as the home of Bill’s Pottery studio and shop. He and Sharon will share the history of the mill and the remaining milling machinery.

10:00-11:00am           Mifflinburg Buggy Museum, 598 Green Street, Mifflinburg

Since the 1880s, Mifflinburg has been known as “Buggy Town” because its buggy makers produced more buggies per capita than any other town in the state. The restored Heiss Coachworks factory and family home pays tribute to that heritage.

11:15am-12:00pm      Tour of Old Mill Creamery, 6542 Buffalo Rd Mifflinburg

Currently used for processing and selling milk and milk products. Owner John Holt will share the history of the mill and remaining equipment.

12:00-1:00pm             Box Lunch at Old Mill Creamery,  6542 Buffalo Rd Mifflinburg

1:15 -2:00pm              Tour of Johnson's Mill, 2271 Johnson Mill Road, Lewisburg

Originally built in 1789. Mazeppa Mill, a former name, is visible on the deteriorated building with no remaining equipment and now used for storage.

2:15 to 3:00pm           Tour of Grove’s/Hoffa Mill, 3013 Hoffa Mill Road, Lewisburg

Curt Falck, current owner, uses the mill for his animal feed business. Much of the old equipment is still in place.

3:15 to 4:15pm           Tour of Dale-Engle-Walker House, 1471 Strawbridge Rd, Lewisburg

The house and farm were restored by the Union County Historical Society in order to interpret the county's agricultural history and early Pennsylvania life.

Saturday, April 18:   MILL MAINTENANCE TALK AND MEETING

9:00 to 12:15pm         Union County Historical Society, 15 North Water Street, Lewisburg

9:00     Workshop: Mill Maintenance and Preservation A water-powered mill requires attention to water systems, mill structures, and milling equipment. For this workshop, our instructor, Tony Shahan, will focus on Part 1: Water Systems

10:30   Tour of UCHS Quilt and Feedbag Displays with Coffee, Tea, and Pastries

11:00   Textile Mill Presentation by Francis Appleman and Helene Basile

11:45   SPOOM Mid-Atlantic Board Meeting with member input
